Safely Escaped from Caricature Bar through New Lounge

Age 23. 48 Beacon Street, Arlington, MA (1940 federal census). Born 6/30/1919, in Arlington. Died 2/25/2003, at Brockton Hospital, Brockton, MA, age 83. Last address 29 Ferndale Drive, Halifax, MA. Private, U.S. Army, Signal Corps. Known as "Frank." Seated at the main floor Caricature bar with friend James Morrissey, age 25, of Cambridge, MA, when fire erupted. Latter to reporters outside the closed State Police probe (quote): "It looked as though it came from the cloak room. It came at us like a shot out of a cannon" (Boston Traveler, 12/03/1942). Added: "Frank said, 'Let's get out of this place,' and he started toward the new cocktail lounge..." Also: "Frank was about 10 persons ahead of me." Both escaped east through the Broadway vestibule exit uninjured. Graduate of Somerville Trade School, Somerville, MA. Occupation (1940 federal census): plumber's helper, building construction. Was single. Married the former Barbara A. Reinold (Surname Connolly by previous marriage. Born 12/15/1917. Died 6/20/2004, age 86) in 1949. Longtime pipe fitter and maintenance worker for the Brockton Housing Authority. "In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his wife and family" (obituary). Survived by same wife. Death occurred just five days after the tragically similar fire at The Station night club in West Warwick, RI, which claimed 100 lives. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank D., Sr., and Christine G. (Cullen) Ahern, same address. Burial at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton, MA. Middle name Daniel.
