At the city inquests, 11/30/1942 (quote): "I was just telling a party there was no more room when I heard someone shout 'Fire,' and I opened the door. The crowd was so large behind me that it pushed me right out into the street" (United Press wire article, 12/01/1942). To Boston Police: "I didn't notice any flames. I just heard someone yell, 'Fire, open the door'" (inquest transcript, 11/30/1942). With two unnamed waiters found a wooden plank and tried to batter the Shawmut Street service door (also known as the kitchen "delivery door") from outside, but relinquished the job to firemen. Testified at the spring 1943 manslaughter trials of brothers Barnett "Barney" and James "Jimmy" Welansky, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine: "Just before I was pushed into the street I saw a table being overturned and people falling over it' (Boston Daily Record, 3/24/1943). Was single. Grove busboy 1939 to 1940, left the club to become a waiter at the Hotel Lucerne, Boston. Younger brother of waiter Frank (above). WWII U.S. Army veteran awarded Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Metal for bravery. Founding director of South Dade Farmers Bank, Homestead, FL, in 1951. Opened Capri Italian Restaurant, Florida City, FL, in 1958. Longtime bachelor married the former Jean Cairnes (Surname Moore by previous marriage. Born 2/10/1939. Died 4/15/2024, age 85) in 1979, at age 56, in Florida. Known in later years by his middle name Richard. Survived by same wife.
