To Boston Police, 11/30/1942 (statement transcript): “Well, I went downstairs for an order...As soon as I went down for the order, the barboy said “Fire’” (see Harry Kirker). Started back upstairs towards phone booth to call police. Told partner waiter Adolph “Chico” Cecchini, “...to scram because there was a fire in the Melody Lounge” (latter to Boston Police, 12/10/1942). Opened left side of main dining room double-door exit leading out to Shawmut Street. Testified: “Before I got to the other half the people shoved me out of the way” (Boston Fire Dept. inquest, 11/30/1942). Added: “There is a screen door right before the door...a regular screen like you have in the First National Stores.” Led all of his customers to safety. Fits description of a waiter observed by patron and survivor Howard Jones, Cambridge, MA: “He said, ‘How am I going to get home to Everett?’...He said he was downstairs...He said he heard it was a pot of grease” (Fire Dept. inquest, 11/29/1942). Older brother of Grove waiter Salvatore Accursio. To U.S. in 1920. Was single. Married former Giovannina F. “Jennie” Barbagallo (Born 10/21/1922. Died 6/07/2016, age 93) in 1943, in Lawrence. With his brother later operated Accursio Bros. groceries market in Lawrence. Siblings made news in May 1949 when they recognized and overtook a truck in Reading, MA, they had reported stolen earlier the same week. Living with his wife in Methuen, MA, as of 1960 street listings (occupation: trucking). Later a sales representative for Prince Macaroni Mfg. Co., Lowell, MA. Survived by same wife. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Lucio S. and Mary P. (Abramo) Accursio, same address. Burial at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.
