Died 11/29/1942 (Sunday), at 6:20 a.m., Boston City Hospital, carbon monoxide poisoning and burns (death certificate). Test man at New England Telephone & Telegraph Co., Quincy office. Attended the big afternoon B.C./Holy Cross collegiate football game at Fenway Park with unmarried sisters Ellen, age 41 (Born 6/17/1901. Died 1/30/1974, age 72. Last residence East Milton, MA), survived, and Margaret Fitzgerald, age 33, dead, also Miss Catherine M. Murphy, age 33, dead, all of West Quincy (Quincy), MA (address shown on his WWII draft registration, April '42, was 69 Bryant Avenue, West Quincy, same as the Fitzgerald sisters). Ellen Fitzgerald was a coworker at the above telephone company. Foursome was seated at a table in the main dining room only minutes when the fire broke. Led both Fitzgeralds to the street, but when Margaret dashed back to get her coat he followed. "Taken out on a stretcher later by rescue workers, he was rushed to City Hospital suffering from third degree burns of the hands and face. Oxygen was injected into his lungs in an effort to save his life but he succumbed...Sunday morning" (Hyde Park Tribune, 12/03/1942). Was a widower, late wife former H. Pauline Packard (Born 8/10/1895. Died 2/28/1925, of kidney disease, age 29), married in 1918, in Boston. An engagement to the above Ellen Fitzgerald was announced in May 1939 (Quincy Patriot Ledger, 5/13/1939: "There are no immediate plans for the wedding"). Marriage was never consummated (status of the "engagement" at the time of the blaze was unknown, no mention of nuptial intent was reported in news accounts). His would-be bride lived another 31+ years, never married. Was survived by an adult son, Richard, age 21. The Hyde Park address above (shown on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties) was that of his late wife's mother.
