Age 24. 8 Sylvia Street, Lexington, MA. Born 3/22/1918, in Lexington. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Aviation cadet, U.S. Navy. Attached to First Naval District Headquarters, Boston. Recently completed a military pre-flight aviation course at Colby College, Waterville, ME. Was visiting home on a brief break before reporting to Chapel Hill, NC, for further training on December 10. Was at the club with his companion Miss Sherly "Shirley" Yavner, age 21, of Roxbury (Boston), MA, dead. "His car still stands in a nearby parking lot and both are reported as missing" (Evening Tribune, Lawrence, MA, 11/30/1942). Remains were identified Monday morning at Southern Mortuary in Boston by naval authorities. "Cadet Bluestein was not in uniform at the time of his death and was wearing civilian clothes, parts of which were at the mortuary..." (First Naval District inquest transcript, 12/02/1942). Was not considered by the Navy to be on active duty, between assignments. Was single. Was a graduate of Lexington High School in 1935. "Bill, a good-natured boy and star basketball player...hopes to become a travelling salesman" ('35 Lexington High School Year Book). Entered the Navy the past May 14. Was previously an assistant pharmacist at Dana Pharmacy, Cambridge, MA (WWII draft registration, October '40). Was the lone fire victim from the historic town of Lexington. One of only two known Grove casualties (of 490) whose family still resided at the same address as had the victim going into the 21st century (also a victim in another party, Edward Fogel, age 34, whose relatives still lived at the former Cambridge, MA, home). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Max and Minnie (Glogower) Bluestein, same address. Burial at Mount Lebanon (Vilno) Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA. One of 23 fire casualties interred at Mount Lebanon collective Jewish cemeteries, the third-most after attached Mount or "Old" Calvary and New Calvary cemeteries (30 burials combined), followed by St. Joseph's Cemetery (24 burials), both also in Boston. Middle name Meyer.
