Fisher
Theodore "Ted" Fisher
(1915 - 1942)

Age 27. 1666 Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton (Boston), MA. Born 6/18/1915, in Syracuse, NY. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Salesman (death certificate), or "junior executive in charge of defense work" (Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cleveland, OH, 12/02/1942), for Northeastern Radio, Inc., Boston (note same employer as fire victim Earl Cohen, age 29, Roxbury, MA, likely but not confirmed to be in the same party). Known as "Ted" (also "Teddy"). Was at the Grove to announce his engagement with Miss Betty Cohen, age 28, of Dorchester (Boston), MA, dead, and marriage three weeks' hence. The Cleveland Press, Cleveland, OH, 12/01/1942: "Yesterday [Monday] came the engagement announcement and a letter in which Ted said: 'We have set Dec. 20 for our wedding and will be in Cleveland for our honeymoon'..." Also: "Several hours later they [the family] received word that Ted was dead." His siblings in Ohio, "...had to keep the sad news from their father...so ill they fear news of Ted's death would kill him" (The Cleveland Press, 12/01/1942). An older brother Sol, age 42, went to Boston, identified his siblings' remains late on Monday "through jewelry." Moved from upstate New York with his family to Cleveland in youth. "He attended Ohio State University two years and was a member of the football and wrestling team there" (Cleveland Plain Dealer, 12/02/1942). Came to the Hub two years earlier to work for the above wholesale radios and appliance distributor. Resided locally with a married sister, Mrs. Dorothy Singerman (not present) at the Brighton address above. Misreported in the 11/30/1942 Syracuse Herald-Journal as a "beautician in Boston" (above brother operated a beauty parlor in Cleveland). Full build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 9," 200 lbs.). A widely-misreported group size of "22" (including the wedding couple) was inflated; the actual count was revealed by the above brother as consisting of the wedding pair, "...and eight other friends" (The Cleveland Press, 12/01/1942). Party (of ten) was regardless the single largest known present in which all perished. Parents Mr. John and the late Mrs. Rebecca "Rea" (Kaufman) Fisher. The Cleveland Press, 12/01/1942: "The body of 27-year-old Ted Fisher...was on its way to Cleveland today [Tuesday] for burial." Cemetery location (if any) not announced.
