Wasserman
Theodore I. Wasserman
(1903 - 1942)

Age 39. 131 Freeman Street, Brookline, MA. Born on 4/29/1903, Volinsky, Russia. Died of burns (death certificate). Superintendent, Kesslen Shoe Co., of Kennebunk, ME (local office: 179 Lincoln Street, Boston). Was known as "Ted." Was seated in a main dining room party of six with his wife Adelaide "Addie," age 32, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Amelia Bernstein, ages 46 and 41, of Portland, ME (the latter was an older sister of Mrs. Wasserman), also Mrs. Sadie Levin, age 38, and her husband Bernard "Ben," age 40, of Newton, MA. Lone survivor Mr. Levin (Born 7/04/1902. Died 3/05/1971, age 68. Last residence Newton) "...miraculously escaped and is now recuperating at his home...' (The Boston Evening Globe, 12/03/1942). Reported in the 11/30/1942 Fitchburg Sentinel, Fitchburg, MA, that the gathering was planned to honor a Lieut. Howard Miller, of Fitchburg (not present), home on a short leave from the U.S. Army, who preferred instead to visit elsewhere from his station in Maine (connection with the others unknown). Two additional couples, Mr. and Mrs. Philip and Sadie Reuben, and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold and Dorothy Goodman, all of Portland, ME, were to meet the group at the club but found it over capacity and attended a nearby theatre instead. To the U.S. in 1917. Earned a degree from Boston University Law School (same as his future wife). Relocated with his wife from Maine to the Bay State one month before the blaze. With his wife was misidentified by Grove author Paul Benzaquin in the 1959 book Holocaust! as one of two older couples in a main dining room image by roving club photographer Doris "Lynne" Andrews, age 24, posed three hours before the disaster struck (the four actual subjects were never identified). The Down-East-based footwear firm above continued in operation until 1978. A future grandchild (an offspring of his orphaned son William), Mycroft Maseda, wrote of victim grandparents in November 2019: "May their memories be a blessing, and blessed be the True Judge, as we say in Judaism" (MasadArts.blogspot.com). Russian parents were listed as "unknown" (death certificate). Burial with his wife and victim sister-in-law at Grove Street (Adath Jeshurun) Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA (shared stone misstates the date of death for the couple as "November 30," and the age of Mr. Wasserman as "41 years"). Middle name Israel.
