Junior at Radcliffe College, Cambridge, MA (residing at 22 Whitman Hall). In a mixed party of four with escort Alonzo Hearne, U.S.N.R., age 24, dead, also Arthur Lee, U.S. Navy, age 22 (Born 11/24/1920. Died 5/29/2004, age 83. Last residence Williamstown, MA), and the latter's date, Radcliffe classmate Miss Christian Murray-Allen, age 18 (Born 4/28/1924. Died as Christian Gerhard on 10/10/2021, age 97. Last residence Bethesda, MD), latter two survived. Both men were ensigns in special military training at the Naval Supply School of Harvard University. Group was seated in the cellar Melody Lounge near the northwest corner where the fire started. Had ordered drinks but were never served because of the crowd. Case #27 of 39 in a landmark 1943 Mass General Hospital Grove burns study (no history obtained. Arrived "manic and hysterical," in moderate shock. "After an hour she developed respiratory failure...Six hours later...she awakened and coughed...The next morning her breathing was labored..." Rapidly failed and died the 3rd day at 1:55 p.m., pulmonary failure. Burns: 2nd and 3rd-degree, face, arms, back, buttocks, hands; 3rd-degree: right side of face, forehead, mouth. Total 22% of body. Autopsy: "Extensive pulmonary lesions appeared to be the major cause of death"). Parents in Pennsylvania were notified of the tragedy by the dean of Radcliffe College (The Latrobe Bulletin, 11/30/1942: "The McKennas have no telephone and the call came to the home of...a neighbor"). Her father arrived in Boston hours before she died but was not permitted to see her. Graduate of The Baldwin School (girls' private academy), Bryn Mawr, PA, 1940. Was single. One of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Philip M. and Dorothy C. (Collins) McKenna, same residence. Her father was founder (in 1938) and president of McKenna Metals Co., of Latrobe, PA, forerunner of the 21st-century 10,000-employee Kennametal, Inc, of Pittsburgh, PA (precision cutting tools and metal components). Cremation of her remains at Mount Auburn Crematory, Cambridge, MA (burial site if any not reported). Parents gifted five sanctuary stalls in her memory to Christ Church, in Cambridge, on 5/30/1943. Miss Murray-Allen above would become one of the last three known living Grove fire survivors upon her October 2021 death, at age 97. Middle name Edith.
