Susan "Susie Ann" Wright
(1898 - 1942)

Age 44. 800 Beacon Street #24, Boston. Born September 1898, in Lynchburg, VA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Supervisor, shoe factory (death certificate). Was known as "Susie," also as "Susie Ann." Companion (or companions) at the Grove unknown. Her remains were brought to Southern Mortuary, Boston. Personal effects including her handbag were claimed by an unnamed friend at Boston Police Headquarters on the following Friday. "The purse was so badly burned that it was only possible to identify it through a set of automobile keys which it contained" (The Boston Evening Globe, 12/04/1942). Was raised in Elon (unincorporated), Amherst Co., VA. Was divorced, ex-husband Tandy "James" Woody (Born 4/07/1894. Died 8/23/1974, age 80), married in 1917, in Madison Heights, VA. Was deserted by her husband in 1929, then later came to Boston. Divorce was granted on 8/01/1940. Was living (surname "Wright") in Roxbury (Boston), MA, as of the 1940 federal census (occupation: "sole binder, shoe manufacturer"). Appeared as "Mrs. Sadie Wright" in some era street listings, first name "Susan" in others. First name was shown as "Susanne" in news accounts and in published death notices, as "Susie Ann" on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties. Name was simply "Susan Wright" on her death certificate (informant Clarence Wright, an older brother). Was the only fire victim (of 490) omitted from the annotated rough draft of the Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of Grove casualties (which has survived), but was correctly included on the published November 1943 final version. Parents Mr. and Mrs. John E. and Mary Catherine "Kate" (Williams) Wright. Burial in an unmarked grave at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester (Boston), MA. Was one of two known Grove fire victims still lacking burial markers eight decades after the tragedy (also the otherwise unconnected Miss Evelyn Richardson, age 24, interred without notice at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley, MA).
