Age 21. 29 Dresser Street, Southbridge, MA. Born 1/08/1921, in Southbridge. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Employed at American Optical Co., of Southbridge. In a southern Worcester County area party of eight including Mr. Donat Ducharme and his wife Dorothy, ages 29 and 25 respectively (both survived), four dead including a married older sister Mrs. Rita Bellows and her husband H. Houghton, ages 24 and 25, of Southbridge. Was an escort of Miss Louise Bouvier, age 20 (Born 8/18/1922. Died as Louise A. Pontbriand on 11/08/2019, age 97. Last residence Bourne, MA), of Southbridge, injured. Group went to Boston to witness the big season-ending B.C./Holy Cross collegiate football game at Fenway Park, then made post-dinner reservations at the Grove. Was returning to the main dining room party table after dancing with Miss Bouvier when fire broke. One of 60 "probable identifications" listed Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). According to an older brother Theodore (not present), he was not burned but, "...appeared to have suffocated" (Southbridge Evening News, 12/01/1942). Was a graduate of Mary E. Wells High School, Southbridge, 1939 (same alma mater as above party companions H. Houghton Bellows in 1935 and his sister Rita, future wife of Mr. Bellows, in '36). "His three years on the basketball team were crowned by his election as captain his senior year" (Southbridge Evening News, 11/30/1942). Was previously a clerk at Russell Harrington Cutlery Co., of Southbridge (1940 federal census). Was single. First name was misspelled "Stephen" (with a "ph" instead of a "v") in numerous news accounts (correct spelling on his death certificate and on the final official Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties). Lean build (WWII draft registration, February '42: 5' 11," 160 lbs.). Miss Bouvier upon her November 2019 death at age 97 was the last living among 166 Grove survivors to appear on the above 1943 Committee on Public Safety inventory of hospitalized. Parents Mrs. Malvina (Gaumond), same address, and the late Mr. John B. Casavant. Burial at Saint George Cemetery, Southbridge. Middle name Oscar.
