Shirley B. "Bunny" Leslie
(1922 - 1942)

Age 20. 38 The Fenway, Boston. Born on 11/12/1922, in Brooklyn, NY. Died on 11/30/1942 (Monday), at 7:45 a.m., Boston City Hospital, carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Cigarette girl, was employed directly by the club (a unique feature among major Hub nightspots). Known as "Bunny." Body of the "pretty, brown-eyed girl" was identified at City Hospital at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, seven hours after her death. "A tiny friendship ring set with a diamond in a circle of black stones was the only means of positive identification" (The Boston Globe, 12/01/1942). "She was tall and graceful, 5 ft. 9 in., a brunette with even features and a pleasant, ready smile" (The Boston Globe, 12/01/1942). Also: "...a girl of great beauty and personality..." (Quincy Patriot Ledger, Quincy, MA, 12/01/1942). Had a first-time date planned with Grove orchestra bassist and survivor Jacob "Jack" Lesberg, age 22 (Born 2/14/1920. Died 9/17/2005, age 85. Last residence Fair Lawn, NJ), following the late program. "Last Saturday night...Bunny wore a black evening gown with a full black skirt and a red jacket with a gold embroidered design upon it" (The Boston Evening Globe, 12/01/1942). Was living (at age 7) with her widowed mother in Brooklyn as of the 1930 federal census. From Wollaston (Quincy), MA, to Milton, MA, in 1937. Had attended Lasell Junior College, Auburndale (Newton), MA. Previously worked at the Latin Quarter club, at Old Silver Beach, Falmouth, MA. With her mother was, "...ironically...burned out of their home two weeks ago, and had been living in a hotel near the Grove" (Boston Daily Record, 11/30/1942). Was a younger stepsister of noted actress and singer Lillian Roth, age 31 (Born 12/13/1910. Died 5/12/1980, age 69), latter not present. Was inseparable friends with roving club photographer Doris "Lynne" Andrews, age 24 (Born 6/09/1918. Died on 9/19/1945, pulmonary tuberculosis, age 27), not present (latter was returning on foot from a nearby darkroom when the fire broke). Pair were planning a possible move to Florida together. Was said to be the single most-inquired-of among all Grove victims immediately following the blaze. Parents Mrs. Constance (Ainley), same address, and stepfather Mr. Arthur Roth (born Rutstein). Late birth father Mr. Benjamin F. Leslie. Her stepfather was found dead in his Manger Hotel, Boston, boarding room on 2/16/1943, in poor health since a leg was amputated one year earlier. Burial at Ferncliff Cemetery, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Middle name Beatrice.
