(1925 - 1942)

Age 17. 72 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA. Born May 1925, in Luxembourg, to American parents. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Freshman at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA. Was at the club with escort David Hillman, age 17, Columbia University sophomore, of New York, NY, dead. Mr. Hillman was visiting Boston over the Thanksgiving holidays with his friend Arthur Silberberg, age 18, Harvard University sophomore, also of New York. Also present Wellesley coed Miss Margaret "Peg" Whitson, age 17, of Moylan, PA, the date of Mr. Silberberg, both dead. Was one of four Wellesley College students to perish in the disaster (also Miss Jacqueline Weiss and Miss Alean Winkelman, both age 18, both died with their dates). Her remains were identified by Miss Edith Adams, head of Homestead House at Wellesley College, on Monday at Northern Mortuary in Boston. "The body, according to...Wellesley authorities, has been recovered and taken to the campus chapel" (San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco, CA, 12/01/1942). Funeral services were held the following Tuesday in Worcester: "A number of her classmates and administrative officers of the college were in attendance" (The Townsman, Wellesley, 12/03/1942). From Tynemouth, England, to the U.S. with her family in July 1940, upon outbreak of war. Graduate of Northampton School for Girls, Northampton, MA. Permanent residence was at the Worcester address above, but her parents were living in Pittsburg, CA, for the duration (father was an engineer for Morgan Construction Co., on war assignment). Spent the past summer in California before entering Wellesley. "She was to have left...December 19 to come home for the Christmas holidays" (Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA, 11/30/1942). The Worcester address above was shown on her death certificate, both residences included on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master casualties list. Was the youngest of four Wellesley College fire victims and one of 28 persons under age 18 known present at the club when the blaze broke (14 dead, 14 survived). Was the tenth-youngest fire death overall (of 490) at age 17 years and 6 months. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Eric H. and Nellie (Jackson) Fors. Burial at New Swedish Cemetery, Worcester. Middle name Rachel.
