Age 35. 1496 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA. Born 6/21/1907, Manhattan, NY. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Branch manager, Universal Film Exchanges, Inc., Boston. In a film industry party of 29 to honor western actor Charles "Buck" Jones, age 50 (dead), at multiple tables on the main dining room raised rear terrace with his wife Rhea, age 35, dead. Misreported as "safe" in the 11/29/1942 Boston Sunday Advertiser. Received mention with other movie men in a description of the scene at the nearby Club Mayfair offices by columnist George W. Clarke shortly after the blaze was doused ("Man About Boston," Boston Daily Record, 11/30/1942): "The telephone rang and kept on ringing...Most concern is expressed over the possible fate of Eddie Ansin...of Paul Barron [sic], Charley Stern and Herman Rifkin, all prominent here in the motion picture business..." (all died except for Mr. Rifkin). Raised by his widowed mother in Manhattan. Was living with his wife in Charlotte, NC, as of 1940 street listings (branch manager, same employer). Birth date was alternately given as 7/25/1907 (1914 Hebrew Orphan Asylum records), also 6/05/1906 (WWII draft registration, October '40). Date used above as shown in New York, NY, birth records. Was stocky (WWII draft registration: 5' 9," 180 lbs.). With his wife were one of four married couples present in the large gathering in which both spouses perished (also Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Beatrice Ansin, ages 39 and 37, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver and Josephine St. Pierre, ages 39 and 35, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Anna Stern, ages 56 and 46). Parents Mrs. Fannie and the late Mr. Abraham "Barnet" Baron. Father died in 1912, of cancer. Triple funeral services with his wife and party victim Mr. Stern were held the following Wednesday in New York City (Motion Picture Daily, New York, NY, 12/02/1942: "Burial of Stern, however, will be postponed, pending the outcome of Mrs. Stern's condition"). Interment with his wife at United Hebrew Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
