Mildred H. Rogers
(1909 - 1942)

Age 33. 50 Varnum Street, Lowell, MA. Born 11/23/1909, in Lowell. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Elementary school principal and teacher, Silver Lake School, Wilmington, MA. Known informally as "Milly." In a main dining room party of 12 to honor victim Pvt. Henry T. Fitzgerald, U.S. Army, age 30, of Wilmington, home on furlough from Florida, eleven dead including her lifelong friend Miss Mary Kelly, age 33, of Lowell. Was accompanied by James Fitzgerald, age 38, of Wilmington, dead, an older brother of Pvt. Fitzgerald. Two other non-military Fitzgerald siblings also perished, John, age 41, and Wilfred, age 32. Group ate dinner at the nearby Parker House hotel, had just been seated at their table and served drinks when the fire broke. One year after the blaze the Silver Lake school was rededicated in her name. Recalled (in February 2010, by a student from the late-'60s): "Mrs. Daly...the principal...would go to the office, grab a brass bell on a wooden handle...and ring that thing as loud as she could. Then we would all line up single file and exit the building in orderly fashion...She would tell us that if we hadn't done so, and if there had been a fire, we all would have died just like Mildred Rogers did..." (www3.gendisasters.com). A portrait of Miss Rogers hung over the main doorway until the school closed in the late 1970s, vacant structure was razed in the early '80s after fire damage. Was single. Was a graduate of Lowell High School in 1926 (classmate of the above Miss Kelly). Was a graduate of Lowell Normal School in 1929. Was a lifelong Lowell resident. With Miss Kelly were the lone two victims from the mill city of Lowell. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. and Isabelle (Chisholm) Rogers, same address. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. One of five casualties interred at St. Patrick's Cemetery (also Miss Caroline Gilbride, age 21, George Lowe, age 45, club bartender William "Bubbles" Shea, age 34, plus Miss Kelly). Middle name Hilda.
