Age 37. 4241 Whitsett Street, North Hollywood, CA (local address: Bradford Hotel, Boston). Born 1/09/1905, in Seattle, WA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Visiting singer and pianist in the new Broadway Lounge. "She's a Seattle lass, spent most of her years in Hollywood, is prematurely gray and exactly five feet, nine-and-one-half inches tall" (Miami Daily News, Miami, FL, 6/29/1942). Described as, "...robust and buxom" (Fire Disaster Memorial, Boston Sunday Advertiser, 12/06/1942). Reported ten days earlier (The Boston Globe, 11/18/1942): "The new lounge of the Cocoanut Grove opened last night...has a scroll bar with an elevated semicircular platform behind it and there Maxine Coleman...opened last night" ("Spilling The Beans," by columnist Joseph F. Dinneen). Observed by Mrs. Eleanor Casella, age 26 (Born as Eleanor Marie Grace Rocci on 11/01/1916. Died as Helene E. Galuffo on 2/11/1999, age 82. Last residence St. Petersburg, FL), New Lounge checkroom girl, survived: "There was a door...and I saw the smoke coming, and I saw the fire spurt from the wall, and it happened to catch the singer...Maxine" (Boston Fire Dept. inquest, 12/07/1942). Was ironically the focus of an entertainment column spotlight by the above Joseph F. Dinneen just one day before the disaster (The Boston Globe, 11/27/1942: "Her hair is purple...She wears a bright red feather curled like a clock spring or hop-scotch design against the purple hair..."). Her smiling face was captured in a haunting framed portrait resting oddly intact on the floor of otherwise charred Broadway coatroom ruins, plainly visible in a widely-published post-fire police photo. Was divorced. At times used the billing "The Best-Dressed Woman in America." Was one of five visiting entertainers (of 17 present) to perish (also New Lounge husband-and-wife act Mr. and Mrs. Karol and Ethel Bauer, ages 27 and 32, Melody Lounge relief pianist Howard "Guy Howard" Guy, age 37, and New Lounge singer and pianist Miss Grace McDermott "Vaughn," age 24). Parents Mrs. Mona M. (Hansen), same California address, and Mr. Kee A. Coleman. Burial of cremated remains at Forest Lawn Memorial Park & Cemetery, Glendale, CA.
