Age 33. 21 Myrtle Street, Lowell, MA. Born on 4/08/1909, in Lowell. Died of burns (death certificate). Investigator, public welfare department, city of Lowell. In a doomed party of 12 to honor victim Pvt. Henry T. Fitzgerald, U.S. Army, age 30, home on furlough, eleven dead including Miss Mildred Rogers, age 33, of Lowell, a hometown chum since their school days. Others lost were three older non-military brothers of Pvt. Fitzgerald: John, age 41, James, age 38, and Wilfred, age 32; also Harry Connick, age 54, Miss Mildred Fox, age 29, Miss Natalie McCullough, age 31, Miss Ruth Preble, age 27, and Mrs. Margaret Stewart, age 25). Group had finished dinner at the nearby Parker House hotel, had just arrived at the Grove and were seated in the main dining room when the fire broke. Few known details of their final moments were provided by lone party survivor, Pvt. Robert Horrigan, U.S. Army, age 29 (Born 10/04/1913. Died 5/09/1997, age 83), of Turners Falls (Montague), MA, on leave with Pvt. Fitzgerald from training at Sebring, FL. Pvt. Horrigan reported that drinks had been served, but had not yet been touched. Said he observed, "...a ball of fire shoot across the room, along the wall near the bar" (Greenfield Recorder, Greenfield, MA, 11/29/1967). Informed his area sister (not present) that he remembered running across the dance floor. "His next conscious moment was when the police officers were cutting the blazing clothes from his body" (Springfield Union, Springfield, MA, 11/30/1942). Remains of Miss Kelly were transported to Northern Mortuary, Boston. Was a graduate of Lowell High School in 1926 (a classmate of Miss Rogers). Formerly a school teacher (1930 federal census). Was single. With Miss Rogers were the lone two Grove victims from the mill city of Lowell. Parents Mrs. Elizabeth J. "Eliza" (Cogger), same address, and the late Mr. Charles A. Kelly. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. One of five fire casualties interred at St. Patrick's Cemetery (also Miss Caroline Gilbride, age 21, George Lowe, age 45, club bartender William "Bubbles" Shea, age 34, plus Miss Rogers). Middle name Elizabeth.
