Age 25. 1706 West 39th Place, Los Angeles, CA. Born (as Morris Katzman) on 9/01/1917, in Buffalo, NY. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, also a first-year business engineering student at the Business School of Harvard University (residing at Mellon Hall). To the Grove with Wellesley College freshman Miss Jacqueline Weiss, age 18, of Cincinnati, OH. Miss Weiss was one of four Wellesley coeds attending the club all with dates (also Miss Sadie Fors and Miss Margaret "Peg" Whitson, both age 17, and Miss Alean Winkelman, age 18), all died along with their companions. His remains were identified at Southern Mortuary, Boston. Los Angeles Times, 12/04/1942: "The body of Marvin Katzman...will be returned here by train tomorrow [the following Saturday]." Was raised in Los Angeles. Graduate of Manual Arts High School, Los Angeles. Graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.), 1941. "He was reputed to have visited South America, the West Indies, Hawaii and Africa by thumbing rides" (The Boston Herald, 11/30/1942). Was single. One of ten military students in special training at Harvard deceased (also John Albritton, Sr., age 28, John Bauer, age 27, John Cobb, age 24, Eugene Goss, age 22, Alonzo Hearne, Jr., age 24, John Hey, age 25, John Noyes, age 39, William Roland, age 25, and Kenneth Simpson, 31), an additional five Harvard civilian undergrads were also killed. One of three California victims of the blaze (also club singer Maxine Coleman, age 37, and patron actor Charles "Buck" Jones, age 50). Was slender (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11," 150 lbs.). Wore glasses. One of 33 individuals taken at the age of 25, the most frequent age at death among all 490 Grove victims (followed by ages 22 and 26, with 31 dead each). Late parents Mr. and Mrs. Isadore X. "Max" and Eva (Berkowitz) Katzman, formerly the same address. Entombment at Mount Zion Cemetery (Home of Peace Mausoleum), Los Angeles.
