Age 25. Dun Mar, Aquasco, MD (also 416 Dickman Road, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX). Born (as Marion G. Nulsen) to American parents on 10/16/1917, in Tientsin, China. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Occupation: "at home" (death certificate). Husband Lieut. J. Duncan Elliott, U.S. Navy, age 27, also perished. Was visiting with her husband while his ship, the Navy heavy cruiser U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, docked in Boston for post-North African battle repairs. Had not seen her husband since October until reuniting the past week at his parents' home in Maryland. Pair became childhood sweethearts while both military families were stationed in China. Attended Holton-Arms School (girls' prep school), in Washington, DC. Attended Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, VA. Married in July 1939, in Fort Myers, VA. "The couple's marriage...was a major social event, attended by ranking Army and Navy officers and other officials" (The Evening Star, Washington, DC, 11/30/1942). Parents Col. Charles K. and Mrs. Marion G. (Long) Nulsen. Father was commandant at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio. Resided during periods of military separation with her parents and a daughter Barbara, age 2, in Texas. Daughter, later raised by her maternal grandparents, researched and penned (as Barbara Elliott Adams) the remarkable story of her parents' lives in 2010. Wrote: "This tragedy would define me for the rest of my life." Couple was one of 56 married couples present to both perish, including 22 with children, resulting in 43 minors (under the age of 21) being orphaned (plus one minor daughter orphaned when her widowed father died). Burial with her husband the following Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, with full military honors. With her husband were two of five fire casualties interred at Arlington National Cemetery (also William Clift, U.S.C.G., age 55, Lieut. Arthur Dzendolet, U.S.N.R., age 28, and Ensign Stephen Jones, U.S,N.R., age 23), single resting grounds for the most Grove victims outside of Massachusetts. Middle name Nulsen.
