McDonagh
Margaret C. McDonagh
(1921 - 1942)

Age 21. 51 Pleasant Street, Dorchester (Boston), MA. Born on 11/28/1921, in Worcester, MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Machine operator, factory (death certificate). Companion (or companions) at the Grove were not reported. Her remains were identified at Southern Mortuary, Boston. Met death on her exact 21st birthday. Was one of four victims to perish on their own birthdays (also Mrs. Josephine Powell, age 29, Miss Doris Rosenbaum, age 19, and Kenneth Simpson, age 31), the second-youngest after Miss Rosenbaum and only taken at the onset of adulthood (age 21 in 1942). Was raised in Boston. Some confusion over her surname spelling: was shown as McDonough ("ough" for the last syllable) in the 1930 and '40 federal censuses and in era street listings; McDonagh ("agh" on the last syllable) on her birth certificate, in published death notices, and in her father's (later) December '45 death notice. Was spelled "McDonough" on her death certificate but then hand-corrected to "McDonagh." Misspelled "McDonough" (not corrected) on the final official 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety casualties list published in November 1943. Parents Mr. and Mrs. John J. and Mary (Dalton) McDonagh, same address. Father was a stockman at R. H. White Co. (department store), Boston (the employer of three club casualties: Miss Kathleen McLaughlin, age 23, also unmarried sisters Rose and Sally Summer, ages 35 and 33). Burial at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. Was one of 30 Grove victims interred at New Calvary Cemetery (22 burials) and its adjoining Mount or "Old" Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale (Boston), MA (8 burials), more than at any other single resting site, followed by St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA (24), then Mount Lebanon Cemetery, also in West Roxbury (23).
