Age 42. 16 Elm Street, Peterborough, NH. Born (as Mary Madeline Curran) on 5/02/1900, in Concord, NH. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Proofreader, American Guernsey Cattle Club, Peterborough, NH. Left her New Hampshire home Saturday morning by bus for an overnight Christmas shopping trip in Boston. Was met in town by a friend, Mrs. Amanda Nicholson, age 42 (Born 7/25/1900. Died June 1957, in Dade Co., FL, age 56), of Milton, MA, survived. Pair entered the Grove about 10 o'clock. Learned no tables were available and were leaving when the scream of a girl turned the club into bedlam. Her companion grabbed Mrs. Nyland by the wrist, but a "heat blast" hurled the former into the street. "Mrs. Nyland never reached the door and volunteers found her buried under a pile of smothered and burned victims" (Manchester Union, Manchester, NH, 12/02/1942). "Her charred and trampled body was identified...late on Monday afternoon by her husband...and his brother-in-law...after a long search" (Peterborough Transcript, 12/03/1942). Remains were located at Waterman's Funeral Home, Roxbury (Boston), MA. Was a graduate of Concord High School and Concord Business College, Concord, NH. Survived by an adult son Henry, Jr., age 21, and teen daughter Nancy, age 17. Husband Henry J., Sr., age 48 (Born 9/21/1894. Died 9/28/1984, age 90), married in 1920, in Peterborough, NH, was not present. With her husband had relocated from Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA, to the Granite State the past December to live year round, but previously had summered there. One of nine New Hampshire Grove fire victims, the third-most from any state after Massachusetts (406) and New York (15). Spelled her first name alternately as "Madeleine" (with an added "e" in the third syllable). Parents Mr. and Mrs. John and Mary (Kehoe) Curran. Burial at Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough, NH. Her widowed husband (never remarried) was buried with his victim wife upon his death in September 1984. Middle name Curran.
