
Age 26. 219 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale (Boston), MA. Born 5/12/1916, in Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Self-employed attendant nurse (death certificate). Was in a party of six with her companion William Donovan, age 29, also Mr. and Mrs. Francis and Grace Gatturna, ages 31 and 28 respectively, all of Roslindale, and Mr. and Mrs. John and Marion Steensen, ages 29 and 23, of Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA, all dead (Mr. Gatturna by a fire-induced suicide plunge from a hospital window on 1/09/1943). According to Mr. Gatturna (prior to his death) the group was seated at a table in the main dining room. When fire broke all started across the dance floor towards the band stage. Her remains were transported to Southern Mortuary, Boston. Was one of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47 (the latter two were found not guilty of all charges). Was the only manslaughter case to be dismissed because no evidence was produced about her presence, due to the unexpected death of potential witness Mr. Gatturna. "The government was unable to prove she was actually in the night club at the time of the fire, although her mother testified...that her daughter telephoned to her that night and was never heard from again" (The Boston Globe, 4/09/1943). Was a graduate of Roslindale High School, Boston, 1934 ('34 The Black and Blue yearbook: "A girl there was of quiet ways"). Graduate of the Household Nursing Association and Training School for Attendant Nurses, Boston. Was single. Was a lifelong Boston resident. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Werner F. and Signe A. (Swanson) Wennerstrand, same address. Burial at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. One of four Grove victims interred at the above resting grounds (also patrons Mr. and Mrs. John and Catherine McCann, ages 43 and 32, and Miss Phyllis Atkins, age 22, the latter the final club casualty to expire on 5/05/1943).
