Age 29. 12 Beacon Park, Watertown, MA. Born 12/16/1912, Newport, ME. Died of burns (death certificate). Pharmacist's Mate, 1st class, U.S. Naval Reserve. Attached to the U.S. Naval Dispensary, Washington, DC. Was home from Washington on a two-day holiday pass. At the Grove with his fiancée Miss Helen Savage (Uservitch), age 26, of Norwood, MA, dead. A divorced older sister Beryl, age 32 (not present), left the couple at the club then drove home because she had a headache. "Lloyd E. Beckwith...had only been in Boston for a few hours before attending the ill-fated night club..." (Watertown Sun, 12/03/1942). Remains were brought to Chelsea Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA, identified by his (reported) stepfather and the above sister from a watch and ring. "The body was burned beyond identification" (First Naval District inquest transcript, 11/30/1942). Was raised in Presque Isle, ME, and in Watertown. Graduate Middlesex University (predecessor of Brandeis University), Waltham, MA, School of Podiatry, 1937. Civilian occupation: foot doctor ('40 federal census). Naval enlistment in January 1942. One of two Grove victims from the city of Watertown (also Miss Helen O'Brien, age 19, a patron in a separate party). Birth parents Mrs. Ferne M. (Rowe), same address, and the late Mr. Elbert G. "Bert" Beckwith. Father committed suicide by shotgun blast on 4/07/1935, in Presque Isle, ME (The Bangor Daily News, Bangor, ME, 4/09/1935: "Despondency was believed to have been the cause..."). Mother operated Ferne Beauty Shop at North Station, Boston, where both Dr. Beckwith and his fiancée had been previously employed. Mother resided at the Watertown address above with a Mr. Ernest D. Wood, shown as a "stepfather" of Dr. Beckwith in news accounts and on his death certificate, but as a "lodger" in the '40 federal census (no record of any marriage to his mother). Burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown. Middle name Elbert (gravestone misspells his middle name as "Albert" with an "A").
