(1920 - 1942)

Age 22. 8 Everett Avenue, Winchester, MA. Born 1/10/1920, in Winchester. Died on 11/29/1942 (Sunday), of burns (death certificate). Civil assistant in the Field Director's office, U.S. Naval Recruiting Station, Fargo Barracks, South Boston (Boston), MA. Went to the club with companion William "Billy" Harlow, age 21, of Concord, MA, a visiting Grove singer the past summer, dead. Latter was on a two-day furlough from the U.S. Naval Reserves in Maine. Pair arrived to meet with club orchestra saxophonist Alfred "Al Willet" Ouellette, age 31 (Born 12/09/1910. Died 3/25/1997, age 86), a friend of Mr. Harlow, survived. Was reported by Grove author Edward Keyes that Mr. Willet delayed a reunion planned between shows due to a "hot" card game, was thereafter haunted by the deaths of his guests (Cocoanut Grove: "I bet one life and raise one more...!"). Her remains were identified on Sunday by her father at Northern Mortuary, Boston. Was a graduate of Miss Hall's School (girls' prep school), in Pittsfield, MA. Was a volunteer Red Cross worker. Was single (reported by author Keyes as engaged to Mr. Harlow, not otherwise confirmed). Was a lifelong Winchester resident, one of nine casualties from the ill-fated small northwest Hub suburb (also Miss Marion Ambrose, age 21, Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Gladys Charles, ages 27 and 29, Joseph Dineen, age 23, Wilbur Meserve, age 25, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, Jr., and Pauline Saunders, Jr., ages 27 and 28, and Miss Helen M. Welch, age 21, all patrons). With Mr. Harlow were two of 228 fire victims showing "burns" as the primary cause of death on their death certificates, the same count (exact) as those recorded dead by "carbon monoxide poisoning" (eight more displayed both causes, while an additional 26 gave other origins or stated simply "trapped in burning building"). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. and Katherine (Dugan) Woods, same address. Father was president of Crosby Steam Gauge Co., of Boston. Burial at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
