Pianist in a visiting New Lounge musical twosome with his wife Ethel, age 32, dead. Long Island Daily Press, Jamaica, L.I., NY, 11/30/1942: "Bauer was a pianist, and his wife, Ethel...who was critically burned and expected to die, was a singer." Pair were reported as performing their set when fire reached the Broadway annex. Patron and New Lounge survivor Lieut. John H. Senft, U.S. Naval Reserve, age 29 (Born 12/15/1912. Died as John Harvey on 7/20/1975, age 62), to Boston Police, 11/29/1942 (quote): "There was entertainment going on...and the piano player grabbed the mike. When he saw smoke, he said, 'Don't rush.' The flame kept coming up..." Also: "He said, 'Everybody keep quiet.' That was his last remark and flames shot up so terrifically fast he became panic stricken..." Couple was playing the last date of a two-week engagement at the club. "Their contract was to have expired Saturday night although they expected it would be renewed" (Long Island Star-Journal, Long Island City, NY, 11/30/1942). Was included on a Sunday morning list (8:00 a.m.) of 60 "probable identifications" compiled by Boston City Hospital at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). To Queens, NY, in youth. Graduated Newtown High School, Elmhurst (Queens), NY, where he conducted the school band. Before the war directed his own orchestra on Caribbean and South American sea cruises. Pair married the past July in Asbury Park, NJ. Resided with his wife at Sunnyside (Queens), NY, before coming to the Hub three weeks prior (the above Boston address was shown on the final official November 1943 Committee on Public Safety casualties list). Was tall and slender (WWII draft registration: 6' 0," 165 lbs.). With his wife were the only married visiting entertainment to perish (three other wedded performing couples safely fled: musical acts Mr. and Mrs. Carlos and Melisa Campos, ages 28 and 24, Mr. and Mrs. Juan and Rina "Rinita" Pineda, ages 38 and 33, also dancers Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Dorothy Pierce, ages 27 and 24). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Walter and Maria (Balut) Bauer. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside (Queens), NY (one of the few married Grove victims not to be buried with a victim spouse).
