Age 33. 25 Chesbrough Road, West Roxbury (Boston), MA. Born on 5/27/1909, in Boston. Died "en route to Cambridge City Hospital" (death certificate). Occupation: "at home" (death certificate). Her husband John, age 34, also perished. Couple was observing their 11th wedding anniversary in a main dining room group of 15 known as the "Allston-Brighton Sewing Circle" party (origin of the gathering name which first appeared in next-day newspapers was never ascertained). Lone party survivor Frederick Harrington, age 52 (Born 9/21/1890. Died 4/21/1972, age 81), of Brighton (Boston), MA, to Boston Police, 12/03/1942: "We were sitting down and Mrs. Donovan was sitting right across from me. She said, 'Is that a fight?' She was facing the main floor where you come in..." Added: "All of a sudden I saw a flash of flame run up and hit the ceiling." Unidentified remains at Watson Funeral Home, Cambridge, MA, were detailed in the 11/30/1942 Boston Post: "About 50 years old, 170 pounds, with brown hair, blue eyes and with considerable space between each tooth. The woman was wearing a platinum wedding ring with the initials 'J. A. D. - J. F. P.,' and the date, 11-28-31." Also: "The body was dressed in a wine town velvet gown and a green slip. A heavy gold bracelet was on one wrist." One of the last three Grove victims removed across the Charles River to Cambridge to be identified, all early next Monday (also patron Mrs. Beatrice Conway, age 28, and club service cashier Miss Katherine "Kate" Swett, age 67). Graduate of Boston Girls High School. Attended Fisher Business College, Boston. One of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47 (the latter two found innocent of all charges). Late parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. and Hannah (Walton) Pembroke. Burial with her husband at St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury. Middle name Frances.
