Age 16. 182 Washington Street, Dorchester (Boston), MA. Born on 7/11/1926, in Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Senior at Roxbury Memorial High School, Boston. Was a part-time Grove busboy on weekends, working the newly-opened Broadway Lounge. Secured classmate and ill-fated fellow busboy Stanley Tomaszewski, age 16 (Born 5/08/1926. Died 10/20/1994, age 68. Last residence Framingham, MA), his job at the club. Could not be located following the blaze. His whereabouts was discussed between young Tomaszewski and club waiter Herbert Schein, age 25 (Born 2/22/1917. Died as Dr. Herbert Schein on 12/14/2006, Huntington Beach, CA, age 89), survived, in a chance meeting at Boston City Hospital on Sunday afternoon. Latter (quote): "He asked me whether I had seen this boy, Joe...We were both more or less upset and he wanted to know whether I knew Joe had been found and that his mother was worried" (Boston Fire Dept. inquest, 12/03/1942). Was subject of a search by Mr. Tomaszewski when the latter revealed to police on Sunday how the fire started in the cellar Melody Lounge. Was the sixth-youngest person at the club when the fire broke, and second-youngest employee present (after survivor Anthony "Tony" Marra, age 15, a busboy). Was the only club busboy dead (of five known present), and lone teen victim (of 46) who was not a guest. Was the third-youngest casualty of the blaze overall at 16 years, 4½ months (after patrons Miss Eleanor Chiampa and Charles Sheehan, both age 15). "A track star at Roxbury Memorial High School, he worked week-ends at the Grove...to contribute his mite [sic] to the support of his family" (Boston Daily Record, 11/30/1942). Memorial services were held at Roxbury Memorial High School the following Thursday: "Two companies of cadets assembled in the gymnasium and six large American flags were carried...to form a hollow square...A simple ceremony was held, concluded by 'Taps'" (The Boston Globe, 12/04/1942). Was a nephew of longtime club maître d'hôtel Angelo Lippi, age 56 (Born 9/04/1886. Died 4/11/1966, age 79. Last residence Milton, MA), latter not present due to chronic illness. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Mary C. (Morelli) Tranfaglia, same address. Burial at St. Michael's Cemetery, Forest Hills (Boston), MA. Middle name Marciano.
