Age 32. Lodging (with his wife) at 15 Pilgrim Road, North Weymouth (Weymouth), MA. Born on 2/06/1910, in East Boston (Boston), MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Clerk, U.S. Post Office, South Postal Annex, Boston. Wife Alice, age 30, also died. "Her husband, John, was among the first victims to be identified" (Medford Mercury, Medford, MA, 12/01/1942). His remains were removed with those of his wife to Southern Mortuary, Boston. Had resided with his wife at 17 Abbott Street, Medford, MA, but the pair had recently relocated to the North Weymouth home of his older brother Edward (not present). Both addresses were included on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety casualties list. A duplicate listing on early published death lists as "John T. Dorsey" was later identified and removed. Was formerly a well-known local semi-pro athlete. Made posthumous news when his wife's estranged mother in June 1944 requested in Probate Court, Dedham, MA, that remains of the couple be unearthed in order to collect valuables buried with her daughter. Justice James F. Reynolds (quote): "I will not order the body of this girl exhumed for the purpose of taking the jewelry from the casket" (Quincy Patriot Ledger, Quincy, MA, 6/07/1944). At 6' 4," 165 lbs. (WWII draft registration, October '40) was among the tallest male club occupants when the blaze broke, based on WWII draft registrations (required for all men present except those already in military service or born starting in 1925). Was the tallest known male Grove fire victim (patrons Scott Dow, age 37, and Bryant Fowler, age 27, were both also 6' 4," both survived). With his wife were two of four casualties from the south shore town of Weymouth (also Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Margaret "Peg" Carroll, ages 51 and 48 respectively). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. and Bridget (O'Rourke) Ducey. Burial with wife at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. Middle name Thomas.
