John R. "Rollie" McCann
(1899 - 1942)

Age 43. 115 Fairway Drive, West Newton (Newton), MA. Born 3/05/1899, in Brighton (Boston), MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Treasurer of a family business, Plastic Turning Co., Inc. (Catlin products), of Leominster, MA. Lodged during the work week at 169 Walnut Street, in Leominster. Known as "Rollie." At the club in a mostly unnamed party of (reported) eleven to welcome his younger brother and survivor Pvt. Francis "Frank," U.S. Army Air Corps, age 34 (Born 10/23/1908. Died 3/02/1972, age 63. Last residence Lancaster, MA), home on leave from Greenville Air Force Base, Greenville, MS. Eight reportedly died, including his wife Catherine "Kay," age 32. Group was located in the New Lounge when the fire broke. Announced in the 11/30/1942 Leominster Daily Enterprise that his body was taken directly from the club ruins. One of 60 "probable identifications" listed Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). Identity was confirmed by two officials from the above plastics business. "He was not burned badly, the belief of medical attendants being that he suffered from suffocation. Papers in his pockets aided the identification..." (Leominster Daily Enterprise, 11/30/1942). Was a graduate of Boston College. Married in 1934, in Waban (Newton, MA). Was one of three B.C. alumni taken in the disaster (also Donald MacMillan, age 30, and Francis Gatturna, age 31, the latter a fire-related suicide victim on 1/09/1943). Vice-president of the Leominster Chamber of Commerce. West Newton address above (shown on the final official Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties) was that of his wife's parents. Was tall and trim (WWII draft registration, February '42: 6' 0," 165 lbs.). Photo shown here (from family archives) was made on November 22, only six days before his demise. With his wife were two of 14 victims from the city of Newton (including its dozen-plus "villages"), and two of three dead from the village of West Newton (also Arthur McLaughlin, age 35). Parents Mr. John M. and the late Mrs. Nellie (Hassett) McCann. Burial with his wife at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. Middle name Roland.
