Was alternately known as "Jake." Had been under treatment at Newport, RI, Naval Hospital several weeks for an undisclosed ailment, was ending a convalescent leave before returning to active duty. To the Grove with Ensign Carl Russell, U.S. Navy, age 21, of Dayton, OH, dead. Latter was also stationed at the New London naval submarine base. "Ensign Paikos...was taken to the Chelsea Naval Hospital immediately after his body had been removed from the scene of the tragedy. He was identified by means of a service disc around his neck" (Haverhill Evening Gazette, 11/30/1942). Was a graduate of Haverhill High School. Was a former pupil of Haverhill High Latin teacher Mrs. Anna Kerrigan, age 53 (Born 8/11/1889. Died 10/11/1957, age 68. Last residence Haverhill), a fire survivor in a separate party of 12. Was previously a roommate of Ensign Russell at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. "The young man graduated...June 19th, one of two Greeks ever to attend the school, and was serving as an instructor on torpedoes at New London, Conn." (The Tipton Daily Tribune, Tipton, IN, 12/01/1942). "He entered the service with one regret, that he could not play baseball for the Boston Red Sox" ('43 Lucky Bag yearbook, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD). Also: "Jake's conscientious and quiet nature, his warm sense of humour plus a good portion of New England wit, made him a swell fellow to know." Was the younger of two fire casualties from the Essex County city of Haverhill (also Miss Helen Griffin, age 33, victim in another party). One of 31 active U.S. Navy or Naval Reserve personnel (including two WAVES) lost in the disaster. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Petros J. and Catherine (Stamos) Paikos, same address. Burial at Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Middle name Peter.
