Age 52. 30 Woodford Street, Dorchester (Boston), MA. Born on 7/16/1890, Lancashire, England. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Warehouseman, T. G. Buckley Co. (agent, Allied Van Lines, Inc.), of Dorchester. Was present in a main dining room group of 15 termed the "Allston-Brighton Sewing Circle" party to celebrate his 29th wedding anniversary (the past Thursday) with his wife Alice, age 48, dead. Observing the 5th wedding anniversary of his daughter Mrs. Mildred Whitmarsh, 28, and her husband William, age 32, also of Dorchester. Also present another married daughter, Mrs. Margaret Lewis, age 24, same address (her husband Raymond, age 31, did not attend because he stayed home with an ill son). All above perished. Lone survivor in the large gathering was Frederick Harrington, age 52 (Born 9/21/1890. Died 4/21/1972, age 81. Last residence Dorchester), of Brighton (Boston), MA (his wife Catherine "Vernie," age 51, was not present). Revealed by a descendant decades later: "John managed to get his daughter Margaret, who was 5 months pregnant, out to the sidewalk, where he collapsed and died" (www.findagrave.com). One of 60 "probable identifications" inventoried Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.) at Southern Mortuary, Boston (all male). To the U.S. in 1894. Survived by an adult son Charles, age 21 (Born 2/03/1921. Died 5/28/1997, San Bernardino, CA, age 76), U.S. Army, not present. Son was notified of the tragedy by telegraph after the family services. Orphaned son made news in April 1946 when charged with a series of Boston robberies and holdups using a toy pistol. In return for a guilty plea was placed on probation with "expressed sympathy" from the judge, in part because: "...while on military service received news that his parents and two sisters, his only relatives, had been burned to death in the Cocoanut Grove fire..." (Boston Traveler, 4/09/1946). Parents Mr. and Mrs. John P. and Margaret B. (Barry) Murray. Burial with his wife and both victim daughters at St. Mary's Cemetery, Scituate, MA. Middle name Joseph.
