In a main dining room mixed foursome with his wife Irene, age 32, injured, and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar, age 33 (Born 8/17/1909. Died 3/10/1993, age 83), survived, and Louise Hubert, age 30, dead, of Wellesley, MA. Mr. Hubert was also an electrical engineer, employed in Boston. Couple departed from their New Hampshire home about 6 o'clock Saturday evening. "The Cushings' 10-year-old daughter, Barbara, a pupil in grade five of the Hampton Center school, had accompanied her parents to Lynn [MA] where they left her with her maternal grandparents while they went on to Boston" (Portsmouth Herald, 11/30/1942). One of 60 "probable identifications" listed Sunday morning at Southern Mortuary (all male). Wife was at first misreported as dead, was alive at Mass General Hospital but suffered severe burns to her "entire face and shoulders" (Red Cross report, June '43). Was living with an uncle in Boston as of the 1930 federal census ("draftsman, electrical house"). Married in 1932, in Cambridge, MA. Couple relocated from Lynn, MA, to New Hampshire the previous January. Wife (Born 10/22/1910. Died as Irene M. Thomas on 12/30/1991, age 81. Last residence Napa, CA) made a full recovery despite burns over 29% of her body. Survived by the above daughter, age 10. The disaster was referenced in the 2015 obituary of the same daughter (Born 8/04/1932. Died as Mrs. Barbara C. Loseth on 6/20/2015, age 82): "Thanksgiving would be a constant reminder...something she remembered till the end. But she also had great stories of her dad and what a wonderful father he was" (Napa Valley Register, Napa, CA, 7/02/2015). Was somewhat stocky (WWII draft registration, February '42: 5' 6," 160 lbs.). With his wife was one of 25 married couples present where one spouse perished and the other survived. Parents Mr. and Mrs. James B. and Harriett L. (Hazelton) Cushing. Burial at Glenwood Cemetery, Everett, MA. Middle name Henry.
