(1915 - 1942)

Age 27. Dun Mar, Aquasco, MD. Born on 8/05/1915, San Francisco, CA. Died of burns (death certificate). Lieutenant (junior grade), U.S. Navy, on leave from the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, docked at port of call in Boston for post-battle repairs. Was known by his middle name Duncan. First name Jesse. Wife Marion, age 25, also died. Couple came to Boston the past Wednesday after a brief visit with his parents in Maryland. Were staying at the nearby Hotel Bellevue, Boston. Times-Herald, Washington, DC, 11/30/1942: "Hotel attendants reported...that they had left for the night club with a Marine Corps captain not further identified" (shipmate Capt. Walter Goodpasture, U.S. Marine Corps, age 25, dead). His remains were located at Waterman's Funeral Home, Boston. "Lieut. Elliott was identified through his Naval Academy ring" (Cumberland Evening-Times, Cumberland, MD, 11/30/1942). One of four U.S.S. Tuscaloosa crew members to perish (also Lieut. Charles "Barney" Ireland, Jr., U.S.N.R., age 24, and Seaman Harry McMullen, U.S. Navy, age 18, plus the above Capt. Goodpasture). Was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, 1937. Married in July 1939, in Fort Myers, VA. Was posthumously promoted by the Navy to the rank of Lieut. Commander. Was survived by a daughter Barbara, age 2. Latter (as Barbara Elliott Adams) researched and compiled an epic biography about her late parents in 2010. "Dun Mar" (address above) was the name of the family farm (address was shown on his military-informed death certificate as simply "Aguasco [sic], Md."). A. Parents Col. Jesse Duncan, Sr., and Mrs. Mary L. (Lincoln) Elliott, same address. Burial with his wife at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, with full military honors. Couple were two of five Grove casualties interred at Arlington National Cemetery (also William Clift, U.S.C.G., age 55, Lieut. Arthur Dzendolet, U.S.N.R., age 28, and Ensign Stephen Jones, U.S,N.R., age 23), final resting grounds for the most casualties outside Massachusetts.
