
Age 20. Officers' Lane (Quarters #47), Fort Devens, Ayer, MA. Born 11/15/1922, in Plattsburg, NY. Died of burns (death certificate). Sophomore at Emerson College, Boston. To the club in a party of eight, four of whom (unnamed) left shortly after 10 o'clock and the remaining four were fire victims, including her college roommate Miss Marilen Playdon, age 19, of Rockville (Vernon), CT, also Osborne Rainer, Jr., age 18, M.I.T. junior, and Pvt. Albert "Clyde" Sullivan, U.S. Army, age 22, the latter two friends from Montgomery, AL. Her remains were identified at Northern Mortuary by, "...a ring on her finger and a remnant of the dress she wore" (The Evening Gazette, Worcester, MA, 12/01/1942), or, "...her teeth and a scar" (Bangor Daily News, Bangor, ME, 12/02/1942). Her military family resided in Carlisle, PA, as of the 1930 federal census. From Webster Groves, MO, to Fort Devens in 1939. Was a graduate of Ayer High School in 1940. Had worked the previous summer in the dining room of the New Belvedere Hotel, Goose Rocks, ME. Was single. Shared online (in March 2008): "Jane Peavey is my great aunt, my grandmother's sister...My great-grandfather [identified] her by dental records, he was a dentist in the Army..." Surname was misspelled "Peavy" (missing the second "e") in multiple news accounts and on her death certificate (correct surname spelling on the final official Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties). Was the lone victim from the north-central Bay State town of Ayer. Parents Col. Harry C., U.S. Army, and Mrs. Beatrice E. (Donald) Peavey, same Fort Devens address. The main flag at Fort Devens was lowered to half-mast in her memory next Wednesday noon until afternoon services. Spring burial on 4/24/1943 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, ME. Full circle (Bangor Daily News, 4/29/1943): "The same afternoon as the committal service, a christening service was held...for little Elizabeth Ann Peavey, five months old daughter of Lieut. and Mrs. Harry C. Peavy [sic], Jr." (an older brother of Miss Peavey and his wife). Middle name Marie.
