(iron and steel dealer), 251 Third Street, Chelsea. Was seated at the cellar Melody Lounge octagonal bar with his wife Ruth, age 39 (Born 12/29/1902. Died as Ruth C. Goldstein on 3/01/1982, age 79. Last residence North Miami, FL), when the fire began. Wife stated at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials that the couple invited piano player Gorizia "Goody Goodelle" Maclone, age 25 (Born 8/04/1917. Died as Gorizia A. Bergman on 12/18/1998, injuries from a Palm Harbor, FL, automobile accident, age 81), for a rum and Coke after her set. Wife testified: "She had nodded her head to say that she would...She was singing her last number...and she was very much annoyed at the crowd in the corner that was making a lot of noise..." (Boston Evening American, 3/30/1943). Wife related to a reporter seeing her husband at the foot of the stairs "go up in flames," then was shoved up the steps herself by the panicked crowd. Mrs. Strogoff at the above trials: "We were hand in hand when we were pushed at the stairs and he went down. I grabbed the banister with my left hand and pulled him up over the second stair. People piled on top of me. I couldn't get him out" (The Boston Globe, 3/31/1943). "After the fire his body was removed from the ruins" (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). Wife dramatically added: "People even fell off the stools where they were sitting" (Boston Traveler, 3/30/1943). His remains were identified at Northern Mortuary early Sunday morning. Mrs. Strogoff was discharged from Boston City Hospital on December 5. Married in 1927, in Brookline, MA. From Malden, MA, to Brighton with his wife in 1937. Survived by children Jacqueline, age 19, and Alfred, age 15. Was one of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Lena (Cohen) Strogoff. Burial at Washington Street (Chebra Kadisha of Chelsea) Cemetery, Woburn, MA. Middle name Sam.
