Pre-law sophomore at Harvard University (residing at Dunster House). Known as "Herb." Escort of Wellesley College sophomore Miss Alean Winkelman, age 18, of Philadelphia, PA, dead. Remains were located Sunday evening at Northern Mortuary, Boston. "His body, although badly burned, was positively identified late last night by relatives" (The Boston Herald, 11/30/1942). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Herbert A., Sr., and Florence G. (Gutman) Cone, same Long Island address. Early confusion regarding both his surname and residence. "The police said they had been advised that one of the Cone sons was a student at Harvard University where he had registered as Herbert C. Arnold" (New York Sun, 11/30/1942). "Although this was the address given for young Arnold by Boston police, no tenant by that name could be located in the apartment house. The Cones explained today that their son changed his name a year ago" (Long Island Daily Press, Jamaica, L.I., NY, 12/01/1942). Was living in Hempstead, L.I., NY (surname "Cone"), as of the 1940 federal census. Graduate of Woodmere High School, Woodmere, L.I., NY, 1941. Attended Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, his freshman year before transferring to Harvard. Retained the title of "Jr." after his surname change. An older brother had also met premature death when his baby carriage was kicked by a horse in Manhattan in 1923. Cremation of remains at Forest Hills Crematory, Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA. Burial site if any was not reported. Middle name Collins.
