Age 21. 28 Lebanon Street, Winchester, MA. Born on 12/15/1920, in Winchester. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Teacher at the Noonan Elementary School, in Winchester. Was in a party of four with fellow teacher Miss Marion Ambrose, age 21, also of Winchester, dead, Lieut. John Stapleton, Jr., U.S. Army, age 25, dead, of Foley, AL, and Capt. Charles Whitmire, U.S. Army, age 23 (Born 7/02/1919. Died 11/25/2003, Arlington, VA, age 84), of Greenville, SC, injured. Foursome attended the afternoon Holy Cross 55-to-12 football upset of nationally top-ranked 4-to-1 favorite Boston College (the latter had outscored their opponents 249-to-14 in eight prior games) at Fenway Park. Had been seated in the cellar Melody Lounge near the foot of the Piedmont Street stairs, "about two tables in." With Miss Ambrose went up to the main level foyer powder room preparatory to leaving the club while their escorts stood nearby waiting. When fire broke Lieut. Stapleton tossed the girls' coats to Capt. Whitmire, then dashed through the building in a failed attempt to rescue them. "One of the army officers is alive [Capt. Whitmire]...and was able to tell the story" (Woburn Daily Times, Woburn, MA, 11/30/1942). Was a graduate of Winchester High School in 1938. Graduate (with Miss Ambrose) of Lowell State Teachers College, Lowell, MA, the past June. Was class president at the latter in each of her four years. Was single. One of two guests named "Helen Welch" to perish (also Norine Helen Welch, age 16, of Port Washington, NY, known popularly by her middle name). One of nine Grove victims from the ill-fated northwest Hub suburb of Winchester. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. and Catherine (Reagan) Welch, same address. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Winchester. Was one of five casualties interred at the above resting grounds (also Joseph Dineen, age 23, Miss G. Virginia McLaughlin, age 19, William Young, Jr., age 36, and the above Miss Ambrose, all patrons). Middle name Marie.
