(1924 - 1942)

Age 18. 724 Jefferson Street, Gary, IN. Born 5/01/1924, Logansport, IN. Died of burns (death certificate). Seaman, 2nd class, U.S. Navy, attached to the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, visiting at port of call in Boston for repairs after the North African campaign. Was injured two weeks prior while docked at Brooklyn, NY. Was on leave to recover at home before returning to sea. Had planned to start for Indiana the following Monday. In a foursome with Coast Guardsman Raymond "Nick" Carter, age 26 (Born 2/22/1916. Died 4/12/1971, age 55. Last residence Quincy, MA), of South Boston (Boston), MA, injured, the latter's date Miss Georgia Canelias, age 20 (Born 7/28/1922. Died as Georgia Voda on 4/13/1973, after an illness, age 50. Last residence Brockton, MA), escaped, and her coworker, Miss Stephanie Sviokla, age 22, dead, both of Brockton, MA. Was invited at random to accompany the group by Coast Guardsman Carter after the latter was unable to find an escort among his own ranks for Miss Sviokla. Known to the others only as "Mac," but observed by Miss Canelias (to the Boston Daily Record, 12/01/1942) as possessing a cigarette case bearing the initials, "H. M." Stayed behind in the cellar Melody Lounge with Miss Sviokla while their companions went upstairs for a dance. Was taken alive from the scene to Chelsea Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA. "McMullen died at the hospital, but his parents...said that a Navy telegram received by them did not state whether the young sailor was burned fatally or was suffocated by gas and smoke" (The Hammond Times, Hammond, IN, 12/02/1942). "On his forearm is an eagle overcrossed [with] American flags" (First Naval District inquest transcript, 11/30/1942). From Logansport, IN, with his family to Gary, IN, four years prior. Attended Emerson High School, Gary, IN. Navy enlistment on 10/02/1941. Was single. Was the younger of two Indiana Grove fire casualties (also Walter King, age 29, a patron in another party). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Glen D. and Anita M. "Neta" (Kinney) McMullen, same address. Burial at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Middle name Orren (misreported as "Arron" on his death certificate and on the final official November 1943 master Committee on Public Safety casualties list).
