Harold Snyderman

Age 32. 119 Brainerd Road, Allston (Boston), MA. Born on 2/23/1910, in Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Grove waiter. Had recently been absent from work due to illness, returned when the new Broadway Lounge opened earlier in the month. "Ill from the after effects of pneumonia, he had resumed service in spite of his condition in order to contribute to the support of his sister..." (The Boston Post, 12/01/1942). Matches the description of an employee seeking refuge in a cellar refrigerator by patron and survivor Miss Marguerite Hassett, age 40 (Born 11/05/1902. Died 7/16/1966, age 63. Last residence Revere, MA), to a reporter: "I gave my coat to a young kid who had been working at the club only a week. He was just getting over pneumonia and shaking with chills...He was a comfort to me then. He said the refrigerator was fireproof" (The Boston Herald, 11/30/1942). Was one of only two known fatalities among club employees who sought safety via the basement kitchen, neither was burned (also service cashier Miss Katherine "Kate" Swett, age 67, overcome by smoke). Was raised in Boston. Was formerly a cabinet worker, factory (1930 federal census). Was single. One of five Grove table waiters killed (also Alexander Dashevsky "Dashev," age 29, Sam Dowaliby, age 33, Mario Marzano, age 26, and Christes Roumeliotis, age 25), plus headwaiter Frank Balzarini, age 37. One of 26 non-patrons deceased (including club employees, entertainers, salespersons, and two passing rescuers, Harold Hawkins, age 46, and Stanley Viator, age 25), in addition to 464 paying guests. At 5' 5," 125 lbs. (WWII draft registration, October '40) was the lightest male fire casualty among those with known WWII draft registrations (includes nearly all men present except those already in military service or born starting in 1925). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Sadie (Sahl) Snyderman. Burial at Washington Street (Kenesseth Israel) Cemetery, Woburn, MA.
