Age 29. 247 Washington Street (Winchester Arms), Winchester, MA. Born (as Gladys Marie Kahle) on 11/02/1913, in Chicago, IL. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Housewife (death certificate). With her husband Robert, age 28, was in a party of five including Mr. and Mrs. Lee and Pauline Saunders, ages 27 and 28 respectively, also of Winchester, and Mrs. Edith Vucassovich, age 41, of Beverly, MA, all dead. The husband of Mrs. Vucassovich, Michel P., age 61 (Born 3/22/1881. Died 3/16/1962, Meadowbrook, PA, age 80), was away on government assignment and not present. Survived by a son from a previous marriage, Robert, Jr. (formerly Charles), known as "Chickie," age 6. Son was under care the night of the fire by a neighbor, Miss Ruth Dodge, age 17, daughter of Mr. Harry W. Dodge, of Winchester. "When the couple failed to return home, Dodge brought his daughter and the boy to his own home" (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). Subject of an oddly worded headline in the 12/01/1942 Woburn Daily Times, Woburn, MA: "Winchester Woman Definitely Reported Dead." Was expecting a second child in January. The son of an acquaintance of her late husband later related online (in November 2012): "Bob and Gladys were celebrating the upcoming birth of their child at the Cocoanut Grove...Her advanced pregnancy prevented them from attending my parents' wedding on November 14th..." (cocoanutgrovefire.org). Was raised in Chicago and River Forest, IL. Was previously divorced, first husband Charles Lamont, Sr. One of five known expecting female fire victims (also Mrs. Louise Hubert, age 30, Mrs. Margaret Lewis, age 24, Mrs. Marion Steensen, age 23, and Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Wyner, age 24, all patrons, all married), two others bearing unborns (both married) survived. With her husband were two of nine Grove victims from the ill-fated small Boston suburb of Winchester. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Otto C. and Christofa M. (Lilleskan) Kahle. Burial with her victim husband at Forest Home Cemetery, Oak Park, IL. Middle name Kahle.
