Lowe
George T. Lowe
(1897 - 1942)

Age 45. 22 Lynde Street (apartments), Boston. Born 2/25/1897, Lowell, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Civilian pipe fitter's helper at the U.S. Navy Yard, Boston. Also owner, Duke's Club tavern, Frost Road, Tyngsboro, MA, closed three months prior due to wartime rationing. Odd account (incorrect) in the 11/30/1942 Boston Herald: "According to information, he had been separated from his wife for about four years. She arrived from New Jersey yesterday morning because, she told the janitor, there had been a reconciliation only the past Thursday. What was to have been a happy reunion became grief-stricken mourning" (story untrue, possibly a case of mistaken identity). Was actually residing at the Boston address above for the duration, joined his wife and daughters at Nashua, NH, on weekends. Had lived with his family in Tyngsboro prior to his Hub-based defense work. A married older sister, Mrs. Julia Thompson, age 52 (Born 4/08/1890. Died 3/09/1963, age 72. Last residence Lowell), of Lowell, not present at the club, "...experienced for hours...the weird sensation of being listed among the dead in the Cocoanut Grove holocaust" (Lowell Sun, 11/30/1942). Error was apparently caused by the finding of her name on her brother's unrecognizable remains. Veteran of WWI. Nickname "Duke." Was tall and thin (WWII draft registration, April '42: 6' 0," 142 lbs.). Survived by daughters Marion, age 20, Mrs. Dorothy Seuss, age 19 (the latter was the only known married minor to lose a parent in the disaster), and Christina, age 17. Wife former Marion M. Kennedy, age 49 (Born 9/02/1893. Died in November 1969, age 76. Never remarried), married in 1921, in Lowell. Duke's Club tavern located on State Route 3A reopened after the war (under new ownership), was destroyed by flames on 6/14/1971. Was rebuilt and continued under various names (including "Duke's Pub & Grille") until its career ended as "LLD" club in June 2015 (site was later the home to Bhakta Samaj, an Indian community center). Late parents Mr. and Mrs. John and Ellen (Cavanaugh) Lowe. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. Widow was interred beside her late husband upon her November 1969 death. Middle name Thomas.
