Age 29. 10 Richardson Street, Brighton (Boston), MA. Born (as Ferdinando Altieri) on 10/03/1913, in Boston. Died of burns (death certificate). Private 1st class, U.S. Army, based at Fort Devens, Ayer, MA. Drove from Fort Devens in north-central Massachusetts Saturday morning to pick up his fiancée Miss Evelyn Gartland, age 27, of Brighton, also dead, "...with whom he has kept company for the past six years" (The Boston Post, 12/01/1942). Couple attended the stunning afternoon Holy Cross 55-to-12 football romp over nationally top-ranked Boston College at Fenway Park, with Mr. and Mrs. Louis, Jr., and Anna Meyer, ages 28 and 24 respectively, of Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA, both dead. After the contest the foursome taxied to the Grove. His remains were identified at the military hospital of Fort Banks, Winthrop, MA. Was a graduate of the Boston Trade School. Was a baker for National Biscuit Co. ("Nabisco"), at Cambridge, MA, prior to his February 1942 military induction. Couple planned to wed the coming Valentine's Day, 2/14/1943. One of 19 Grove victims from the Hub "neighborhood" of Brighton (the second greatest Boston district loss after Dorchester, with 38 dead). One of 18 active Army personnel killed in the disaster (out of a total of 58 personnel lost from all U.S. military branches). With his companions were four of 125 casualties (about one in every four) known to have witnessed the historic season-ending football contest at Fenway Park in Boston (likely unreported others). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Nicola and Rosina "Rose" (DeSisto) Altieri, same address. Double funeral with his fiancée the following Wednesday was attended by Boston mayor Maurice Tobin, age 41 (Born 5/22/1901. Died 7/19/1953, heart attack, age 52). Burial at St. Michael's Cemetery, Forest Hills (Boston), MA. One of seven fire casualties interred at the traditionally Italian resting grounds (also John DeMatteo, age 21, Miss Maria DiFilippo, age 28, Salvatore Ferraioli, age 25, Miss Estelle "Stella" Kwartun, age 26, club busboy Joseph Tranfaglia, Jr., age 16, and Mrs. Mary Zenkin, age 32).
