In a main dining room party of six with his wife Grace, age 28, also William Donovan, age 29, the latter's companion Miss Madeline Wennerstrand, age 26, both of Roslindale, and Mr. and Mrs. John and Marion Steensen, ages 29 and 23 respectively, of Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA, all dead. Mr. Steensen was planning to leave for U.S. Navy training next Monday. Group had witnessed the big season-ending afternoon B.C./Holy Cross college football game at Fenway Park. Case #15 of 39 in a landmark 1943 Mass General Hospital Grove burns study (heard a cry of "fire" from the table, walked across stage. Lights went out. Lost consciousness, woke up in street receiving artificial respiration. Arrived conscious and responsible, no shock. Burns: 1st-degree, face; 2nd-degree, knee. Total 4% of body. Discharged on December 8, burns healed. Returned by his family to Psychiatric Services 34th day post-blaze. Restless, could not participate in ward activities. Repeated: "Nobody can help me. When is it going to happen?" Also: "I'm destined to live in insanity...I have this awful feeling of guilt." And: "I should have saved her or I should have died, too"). On January 9 he jumped through a closed third-story Bulfinch Building hospital window to a paved lot below. Was killed "almost instantly" (death certificate: "multiple injuries including fractured skull and lacerated brain"). Considered the 488th victim of the disaster (of 490 total). Graduate of Boston College 1935. One of three B.C. alumni to perish (also patrons Donald MacMillan, age 30, and John "Rollie" McCann, age 43). Slender build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 11½," 140 lbs.). Was the first of three Grove victims to die during calendar 1943 (also William "Bubbles" Shea, age 34, and Miss Phyllis Atkins, age 22). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. and Susan M. (Arato) Gatturna. Burial with his wife at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale (Boston). Middle name Peter.
