Eleanor G. Chiampa
(1927 - 1942)

Age 15. 24 Belmont Street, Newton, MA. Born 3/10/1927, in Boston. Died the evening of 12/01/1942 (Tuesday), at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital, Boston, burns and inhalation of smoke (death certificate). Junior at Notre Dame Academy (girls' Catholic private school), Boston. Was present with her married older brother, Lieut. Benjamin Chiampa, U.S. Army, age 25 (Born 7/23/1917. Died 7/17/1995, age 77. Last residence Boca Raton, FL), injured, and his wife Giovanna "Jennie," age 22, dead, in a main dining room raised rear terrace party of nine, three died (also Mrs. Adele Dreyfus, age 22, of Brookline, MA; her husband Joseph, age 22, survived). Initially reported as, "...critically injured and given little chance to recover" (The Boston Post, 11/30/1942). "When the fire broke out, she had been dancing with her brother..." (Boston Italian News, 12/04/1942). Lieut. Chiampa later recalled to The Boston Globe, 11/26/1967: "All I wanted to do was grab my sister, find my wife and get out. Jennie [his wife] had left our table and was waiting for us on the rim of the dance floor." Trio started for but never reached the swinging rear pantry doors leading down to the cellar kitchen. Was reported to have safely escaped to the street, but died three days later. Was the youngest patron known present at the club and the youngest Grove fatality overall (of 490) at 15 years and 9 months. Was the second-youngest individual known present overall after busboy and survivor Anthony "Tony" Marra (also age 15), also the youngest female present. Was the only Grove fire victim to succumb at the above Mass Memorial Hospital. One of 20 names chosen by the Commonwealth as representative victims at the spring 1943 Grove manslaughter trials of club owner Barnett "Barney" Welansky, age 45 (not present due to illness), his brother James, age 46, and wine steward Jacob "Jack" Goldfine, age 47 (latter two found not guilty). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Paul and Elena (Corleto) Chiampa, same address. A double funeral with her brother's wife was held the following Friday. Burial with her sister-in-law at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. Middle name Gloria.
