Ross
Edward J. Ross
(1914 - 1942)

Age 27. 99 Woodcliff Street, Roxbury (Boston), MA. Born (surname Rotberg) on 12/07/1914, in East Boston (Boston), MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Salesman, general merchandise (death certificate). Was known as "Eddie." One of four identified guests (of eight present) in an engagement announcement party of ten for Theodore "Ted" Fisher, age 27, of Brighton (Boston), MA, and Miss Betty Cohen, age 28, of Mattapan (Boston), MA, all present dead (other known guests: Miss Edna Fine, age 20, Abraham "Richard" Plager, age 34, and Bernard Supowitz, age 36). A widely misreported party size of "22" was erroneous, based on an unrelated pre-Grove celebration. Actual count at the club was revealed by a brother of Mr. Fisher (not present) to a reporter as the wedding couple, "...and eight other friends" (The Cleveland Press, Cleveland, OH, 12/01/1942). Remains were transported to Northern Mortuary, Boston. Was raised in Boston. Was single. A younger sister Ruth, age 23 (not present), was shown as a night club singer in the 1940 federal census (no known Grove connection). Was tall and fit (WWII draft registration, October, '40: 6' 0," 180 lbs.). Reported decades later (in private correspondence) by a family descendant that among the products peddled by Mr. Ross was foot balm. One of 14 Grove victims from the Hub "neighborhood" of Roxbury (also John Burke, age 34, Mr. and Mrs. Earl and Evelyn Cohen, ages 29 and 27, George Colburn, age 32, Mrs. Helen Daley, age 35, Lester Goldenberg "Gould," age 21, Miss Margaret Graham, age 28, Hyman Horch, age 31, Edward Lennihan, age 20, Mrs. Jennie "Jean" Levy, age 25, Miss Rose Shuman, age 31, Lawrence Stone, age 31, Lawrence Taylor, age 39, and Miss Sherly Yavner, age 21, all patrons). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Max R. and Emma (Goldberg) Rothberg (formerly "Rotberg"), same address. Burial at Mount Lebanon (Shara Tfilo) Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA. One of 23 Grove casualties interred at the above collective Jewish cemeteries, the third-most after connected Mount or "Old" Calvary and New Calvary cemeteries (30 burials combined), followed by St. Joseph's Cemetery (24 burials), both also in Boston. Middle name Joseph.
