Edward J. J. McCarthy
(1895 - 1942)

Age 47. 25 Thorny Lea Terrace, Brockton, MA. Born on 8/14/1895, in Cambridge, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). President and treasurer, McCarthy's, Inc. (department store), 102-104 Main Street, Brockton. Was attending the club with his wife Elleen, age 32, dead, in a main dining room party of 14 hosted by patron Mr. Ernest Bizzozero (dead) and his wife Marion (survived), both age 40, of Quincy, MA, five survived. Group had witnessed the big afternoon B.C. Eagles / Holy Cross Crusaders collegiate football contest at Fenway Park, then while the others attended a cocktail party at the Quincy home of the Bizzozeros, the pair returned to Brockton: "...Ellen to look in on her babies...'Ed' to take care of some business matters at his department store" (Brockton Daily Enterprise, 11/30/1942). Couple drove back to reunite with the others at the club. "McCarthy's body, horribly burned, was identified by...a brother-in-law..." (The Boston Globe, 11/30/1942). Unrecognizable remains at first were believed to be those of his wife. Brockton Daily Enterprise, 11/30/1942: "Eventually it was proven that the body was that of Mr. McCarthy rather than that of his wife, and the confusion resulted from the fact that some identification belonging to Mrs. McCarthy had been found in her husband's possessions." Graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School, Cambridge, 1913. Married in 1936, in Brockton. Described in the 11/30/1942 Brockton Daily Enterprise as, "...tall, smiling, quiet-voiced..." (WWII draft registration, April '42: 6' 0," 228 lbs.). Resided summers with his wife at Centerville (Barnstable), MA, on Cape Cod. Reported in the 12/13/1942 Boston Herald that his Brockton dry goods store was in the process of liquidation. Mercantile was ironically located directly across the street from Jo's Beauty Shoppe, 103 Main Street (closed in mid-1941), owned by victim sisters in another party, Mrs. Josephine Powell, age 29, and Mrs. Helen Cafarella, age 26, both formerly of Brockton. With his wife were two of four taken from the "Shoe City" of Brockton (also patrons Miss Lorraine Carlson, age 16, and Miss Stephania Sviokla, age 22). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Daniel J. and Ellen C. (Furfey) McCarthy. Burial with his wife at Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Middle name Joseph (WWII draft registration).
