Age 30. 40 Ruthven Street, Quincy, MA. Born 12/14/1911, in Boston. Died the morning of 11/30/1942 (Monday), of burns, at Cambridge City Hospital, Cambridge, MA (death certificate). Layout man, Bethlehem Steel Co., Fore River Shipyard, Quincy. In a foursome with his wife Dorothy "Frances," age 26, also Mr. and Mrs. Louis "Barry" Nash, age 29, and wife Helen, age 26, of Wollaston (Quincy), MA, all dead. Couples met in June 1941 aboard the steamer Chatham on their respective honeymoons as the vessel sailed from Boston (misreported in the 11/30/1942 Quincy Patriot Ledger that the pairs were wed in a double ceremony). Group had dined together and were photographed at the Grove exactly one year earlier (photo shown here). Was a graduate of Thayer Academy (coed prep school), Braintree, MA. Graduate of Boston College. Was previously an electrician's helper (1940 federal census). Survived by a 7-week-old baby son, Richard. Daughter Ellen of Mr. and Mrs. Nash (who was three days younger than the above son) revealed in an 11/23/1992 AP interview that the two surviving offspring never met. With Mr. Nash were two of eleven Grove victims employed at the above Fore River shipyard (also Joseph Clancy, age 24, Charles Duhamel, age 27, Arnold Isaacson, age 22, Carl Nelson, age 19, Henry Rivoire, age 19, John Steensen, age 29, Miss J. Louise Sullivan, age 27, and unmarried sisters Louise and Irma Wilding, ages 22 and 19, all patrons). Was the youngest of three Boston College alumni claimed by the disaster (also John "Rollie" McCann, age 43, and fire-induced suicide victim Francis Gatturna, age 31). Surname (with his wife) was misspelled "MacMillen" (with an "e" on the last syllable) on the final official November 1943 Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (correct surname spelling on their death certificates). Modest build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 5," 140 lbs.). Late birth parents Mr. and Mrs. Ewen G. and Katherine A. (French) MacMillan. Stepmother Mrs. Pearl J. (MacNevin) MacMillan, same address. Burial with his victim wife at Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA. Middle name Richard.
