Was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mass General Hospital. Sophomore at Columbia University, New York, NY. Was in Boston to witness the big Saturday afternoon B.C. Eagles / Holy Cross Crusaders football contest held at Fenway Park. Escort of Wellesley College freshman Miss Sadie Fors, age 17, of Worcester, MA, dead. The Boston Globe, 12/01/1942: "The student from Columbia...was visiting Arthur R. Silberburg [sic], Harvard sophomore, and accompanied him in Wellesley..." (refers to victim Arthur Silberberg, age 18, who died with his date Miss Margaret "Peg" Whitson, age 17, also from Wellesley College). "Born in South Africa, he received his early education in a seminary of the Marist Brothers of Johannesburg...and Hilton College, Natal, South Africa" (Daily News, New York, NY, 11/30/1942). Previous travels had included Sydney, Australia, and San Francisco, CA. Was single. One of 28 persons age 17 or younger known present when the blaze broke (14 dead, 14 survived). Was a citizen of South Africa, youngest of at least three male foreign nationals dead, all college students (also John Billings, age 19, citizen of Brazil; and Stéphane Oppenheim, age 26, citizen of Belgium). Was the ninth-youngest fire casualty overall (of 490) at age 17 years and 5+ months. Middle initial was misrecorded as "J." on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety master list of casualties (correctly shown elsewhere). South African parents Mr. and Mrs. Hirsch and Henrietta "Henny" (Lange) Hillman, same New York address. "They left immediately for Boston on being notified of their son's death" (New York Times, 11/30/1942). His father was connected with the family business, Hillman Bros., Ltd. (timber merchants), of Johannesburg, Union of South Africa. Interment at the Hillman family mausoleum, Mount Hope (Temple Israel) Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson (Greenburgh), NY. Middle name Epraim.
