Charles Capone, Jr.
(1917 - 1942)

Age 25. 44 Wellsmere Road, Roslindale (Boston), MA. Born on 2/22/1917, in Winchester, MA. Died of burns (death certificate). Employed at his father's general contracting business, Charles Capone Construction Co., Inc., of Roslindale. Was at the club with a coworker Francis Connell, and a second cousin, John DeMatteo, both age 21, both also of Roslindale, both dead. Party was planned for Mr. Connell, who was to enter military service the following Monday. Parkway Transcript, Roslindale, 12/03/1942: "Only recently recovered from a fractured instep and in bed most of Saturday, the...young man did not arrive at the ill-fated night club until after 10 p.m. He was dead minutes later." Graduated English High School, Boston, 1935. Was on the road surfacing crew the past summer in the Riverdale section of nearby Dedham, MA. Medium build (WWII draft registration, October '40: 5' 10½," 178 lbs.). Was one of 33 victims taken at the age of 25, the most frequent specific age at death among all 490 Grove casualties (followed by ages 22 and 26, with 31 dead each). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles, Sr., and Philomena (Tedesco) Capone, same address. Burial at Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain (Boston), MA. One of two fire victims interred at Forest Hills Cemetery (also Miss Norma MacDonald, age 20, a patron in a separate party). The above family contracting concern founded in 1919 remained in business under the same name into the 21st century (specializing in asphalt paving), was later based in Dedham.
