Age 24. 2919 Fairway Drive, Birmingham, AL. Born on 2/26/1918, in Alabama. Died of burns (death certificate). Succumbed en route to Chelsea Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA, in a Wakefield, MA, police ambulance (Wakefield Daily Item, 11/30/1942). Lieutenant (junior grade), U.S. Naval Reserve, attached to the U.S. Navy heavy cruiser U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, docked at port of call in Boston for post-battle repairs. Was known as "Barney." Ship's log, U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, 11/29/1942: "0330. Received notification from U.S. Naval Hospital...that they were holding the body of Lt. (j.g.) C. B. Ireland Jr., U.S.N.R. Death resulted from fire at Cocoanut Grove, Boston, Mass." Was one of four U.S.S. Tuscaloosa naval crew members to perish (also Lieut. Jessie Duncan Elliott, age 27, Capt. Walter Goodpasture, age 25, and Seaman Harry McMullen, age 18, all U.S. Navy), two others injured (rescuers William E. Gaughf, age 25, and George Miller Norris, age 18, both Navy seamen). Graduate of Baylor School (boys' preparatory), Chattanooga, TN. Graduated Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, in 1940. Captained golf teams at both schools. Enlisted in the Navy a month after his graduation from Vanderbilt. "Lt. Ireland had been on sea duty in the North Atlantic and his parents were expecting him home for Christmas" (The Tuscaloosa News, Tuscaloosa, AL, 11/30/1942). Surname was misreported as "Ashland" on early casualty lists, was later corrected. One of seven Alabamians taken by the disaster (also Ensign John Albritton, Sr., U.S.N.R., age 28, William Robert Norton, age 20, Osborne Rainer, Jr., age 18, Broaddus Robinson, age 20, Lieut. John Stapleton, Jr., U.S. Army, age 25, and Pvt. Albert "Clyde" Sullivan, U.S. Army, age 22, all patrons). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles B., Sr., and Katherine L. (Reynolds) Ireland, same address. Father was president of Roquemore Gravel & Slag Co., of Montgomery, AL. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, AL. Middle name Byron.
