Age 20. 5609 Springfield Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. Born 8/07/1922, in Philadelphia. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Senior at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Education, Philadelphia. In a foursome with companion Gerald "Jerry" Widrow, age 21 (Born 1/06/1921. Died 4/14/2003, age 82. Last residence Miami, FL), of Portland, ME, also a student at the University of Pennsylvania, his married older sister Mrs. Lois Levitan, age 26, and her husband Leon, age 25 (Born 9/13/1917. Died 5/21/2007, age 89. Last residence Canton, MA), of Brighton (Boston), MA. Both women died, both men survived. Had been visiting with Mr. Widrow at the Hub home of his sister and her husband for the Thanksgiving holidays. Her parents left from Philadelphia on Monday morning after her father phoned the Levitan home and learned the whereabouts of his daughter was unknown. Remains were located at Southern Mortuary, Boston: "Mr. and Mrs. Sussman identified their daughter among the victims" (Evening Courier, Camden, NJ, 11/30/1942). Was single. Was raised in Philadelphia. Graduate of Highland Manor School for Girls (girls' boarding school), Tarrytown, NY. Made news (twice) following her death: "The diploma she was to have received will be awarded posthumously today to Bernice F. Sussman...University of Pennsylvania senior, who was burned to death in the Boston night club fire last November" (Philadelphia Inquirer, 2/06/1943). Also: "Campers of Highland Nature Camp, Naples, Me....sent gifts to the Portland Chapter American Red Cross...in memory of Bernice Sussman, a former camper...Miss Sussman was a victim of the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston" (Philadelphia Inquirer, 9/26/1946). One of seven lost from the Keystone State (also Ensign John Bauer, U.S.N.R., age 27, Miss Marie Louise Hollander, age 21, Miss Sydney McKenna, age 19, Ensign Scovel Swan, Jr., U.S.N.R., age 22, Miss Margaret "Peg" Whitson, age 17, and Miss Alean Winkelman, age 18, all patrons), tied (with Alabama) as fourth-most from any state after Massachusetts (406), New York (15) and New Hampshire (9). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel and Emma (Silber) Sussman, same address. Burial at Montefiore Cemetery, Jenkintown, PA.
